Edward VI named Lady Jane Grey as his heir presumptive. Four days after his death on 6 July 1553, Jane was proclaimed queen. Nine days after proclamation, on 19 July, Privy Council switched allegiance & proclaimed Edward VI's Catholic half-sister Mary. Jane was executed in 1554, aged 16. Few historians consider her to have been a legitimate monarch.

On October 1, 1936 General Francisco Franco was proclaimed Head of State (Caudillo) in parts of Spain controlled by Nationalists (nacionales) after Spanish Civil War broke out. After end of war on April 1, 1939 General Franco took control of whole of Spain. In 1947, Franco proclaimed restoration of monarchy, but did not allow pretender, Juan de Borbón, Count of Barcelona, to take throne. In 1969, Franco declared that Juan Carlos, Count of Barcelona's son, would be his successor. After Franco's death in 1975, Juan Carlos succeeded him as King of Spain.
