Loan and Borrow

Loan and borrow both mean prestar, but loan is to give and borrow is to take. The person who loans, the loaner, gives the item; the person who borrows, the borrower, is the person who takes the item. Both the loaner and the borrower can use both words, depending on how they use them:

1) John- May I borrow your car?

Mary- Yes I will loan my car to you.

2) John- Will you please loan me your car?

Mary- Yes I will let you borrow my car.
