Make & Do

         Make and do mean hacer, but they mean different things in English.

         Make - Is mainly used as: fabricate, construct, create: Make an apple pie. But also...

1) To cause something:

         This switch makes the radio turn on.
         Make me happy and give me what I ask for.
         Cigarettes make me feel bad.
         He has been made general manager.

2) To force someone to do something:

         He didn't want to go, I had to make him go to school.
         They made me go through three metal detectors before I could get on the plane.

3) The result of things being added together:

         Five and five make ten.
         Two wrongs don't make a right.

4) To be suitable:

         I think he will make a very good teacher.

5) Compound verbs -

Make beleive - Children like to make believe that they are adults.
Make up - I made up a story from nothing.

         Do- Has a lot of meanings, but it is usually related to general work.

Example: Do the dishes.
Specific meanings of do:

         1) To form a question: Do you want a cup of coffee?
         2) To stress an idea: I am not lying, I do have a brother in Russia!
         3) To clarify what something/someone is doing: What are you doing here?
         4) To succeed: I did it!
         5) To negate ideas: I didn't do it. I don't do that.
* In this meaning it is only used in the past and present, won't is used for the future.
         6) To perform a function: That secretary does a lot for me.
         7) To spend time: I did five years at Oxford school of English.
         8) To imitate: He does Bush very well.
         9) To study: I do karate.
         10) To function adequately: That will do.
         11) To be able to function without: We can do without a spare tire for now.
         12) As imperative: Do it!
         13) To be finished: He's done. * only used in the past participle form.
         14) To be, or not to be related to: That has nothing to do with what I am talking about. That has a lot do with what I am talking about.
