Say & Tell

Say and tell can sometimes be confused. Say means decir, and tell means contar. Say goes before a personal object pronoun, and tell goes before a noun:

say + something           tell + someone

Say goes before these words:

add, confession, remark, announcement, agreement, statement, complaint,
claim, mention, pledge, declaration, reply, admit, deny, swear, answer, explain

Example: He said his confession to the priest.

Tell goes before these words:

convince, inform, assure, promise, teach, notify, remind, warn, secret, a story, to do something

Example: He told me a secret.

* Some words that go with tell don't have to have a personal object pronoun after
it, for example: ...a story, ...the truth, ...a lie.

* It is possible to use say with a personal object pronoun, in which case you use to; but this is only used when you are trying to stress a point, for example: I said to him.

1) I _______ him I wanted to buy his car.

2) She ______ she agreed with me.

3) The police ________ me I would have to pay the ticket.

4) I ________ I didn't want to go to Vina de Mar.
