Vowel pronunciation lesson
The vowels: A, E, I, O, U
There are an infinite number of ways to pronounce the vowels depending on the accent of the speaker, but there are two main pronunciations; the long and the short. The long vowel is how we pronounce the letter itself, but we need to add an e to the end of the word to pronounce it long. If there is no e at the end of the word than it is pronounced short.
E- The vowel e follows a different rule because it is the vowel letter that changes the vowel pronunciation of the other vowels. To make the pronunciation of e long we add two e's together instead of adding an e to the end of the word.

hate |
heet |
hite |
hote |
hute |
Exception- If you add two consonant letters between the pronounced vowel and the final e, the vowel becomes short again:
*This does not work for the vowel E because there are no words like that.

This is why we add two consonant letters to the comparative form of single syllable adjectives.
Usually words with two consonant letters are adjedtives that can be changed into the comparative.
Examples: Latter, matter, sadder, fatter, taller.
