1 1917 Australia Felix by Henry Handel Richardson 215,500W 862 14:21:47 394M M
1 Proem Richard is more sociable than Mary has ever seen him during sea voyage home, & he does not appear to be as aloof & arrogant as he often was

2
1 Dr Richard Townshend-Mahony, F R C S , M D , Edinburgh, for 2 years proprietor of Diggers' Emporium in Ballarat township, near Melbourne, Australia
2 1852 came to goldfields based on advertising that made gold seem easy to acquire
3 accompanied by his best friend, Purdy Smith, an Englishman with whom he has little in common, but is more refined than typical diggers like old lawyer
4 Mahony refuses to partake of alcohol on even a social level often causes others to dislike him
5 Mahony's courtship of 15 year-old Polly Turnham, who works as a servant at Beamish Hotel, sleeping with 2 plump Beamish sisters Tilly & Jinn
6 After working with her brother, Ned, & facing a battery of questions from her eldest brother John, 2 are able to get married
7 John & his beautiful wife Emma unable to attend when latter falls ill Also arriving for wedding is Polly's older sister, Sarah
3
1 Spoiled flour in store Mahony was inattentive in keeping has got him sued & forced to close store
2 Polly is displeased with dirt floor shack Richard calls home John has gone temporarily mad when his wife's illness leads to her death
3 He was so devoted to her that he needs children removed from his home while he recovers from his grief
4 Polly miscarries, & is more than happy to take in children, Emma (Trotty, later Emmy), Johnny, & Jerry, along with Sarah
5 Sarah takes on a new name, Sara (spoken Sahra) Mahony resumes his practice & they move to a new house
4
1 Mahony begins a longstanding habit of shutting himself away reading religion & philosophy, starring with Lamarck & Maillet, coming from Protestantism
2 wanting to release God from dead-letterism from which centuries had accumulated about Him to reveal a God of mercy
3 Henry Ocock courts Agnes Glenidinning, whose father is in an asylum for trying to kill her
4 Sara is so sick of her name being mispronounced that she changes it to Zara for a more French feel
5 John recovers & takes toward politics with great success, & takes children back in
5
1 Ned takes to wife another Polly, so his sister begins using her real name, Mary, feeling she has outgrown name Polly
2 Mahony has become rather successful as physician, but Henry Ocock has been even more successful, which bothers Richard
3 Mahony does indeed become more & more successful, & Mary becomes deeply involved in preparations for a gala to raise money for statue of Burke
4 John sends his children to boarding school more successful Mahony gets, more he longs to return to England
5 Tempted by gold falsely promised, he had been wanting to extricate himself forever from Australia
6 He sells house to pay for journey, desiring to set up a country practice in a country where apples grow red on all sides.
